Chinese lattice designs are a much appreciated art form around San Francisco. The idea of lattice reflects the main theme of the novel which is groups. The idea of a grate fencing something in or fencing something out becomes the lattice, the interconnectivity of relationships. Each artwork is a complex reflection on how the self is pulled by seductions of freedom and repulsed by barriers and rules. The dynamic state of the background is seen as confined by the iron grid of the gate. These artworks were generated on a computer using various algorithms for shape and phased color synthesis. Then rendered into postscript enabling them to be printed at any page size and printer resolution. The titles reference the stages of consensus reality.
