"Thoughts on Vacation":
"... Lyons' picaresque novel creates a pare of characters that have not been seen since Don Quixote and Sancho Panza here tilting at windmills of the nano world or Beuvard and Pecuchet, learning the new molecular biology of our time..." Conde-Nast Travel and Leisure Magazine

Portrait of the Writer as a Jungian

After you get into your 30s or 40s you start wanting some answers about what does it all mean. I have found the analytic or archetypal psychology of Jung to be transformative in its methods. To come to this knowledge about the human psyche is one of the great pleasures of life, not to be missed when going through here.
The pathway to self-knowledge is long and arduous and full of insight.
To become awakened you have to fight a spell with a spell.
Seeing Through the Spell of Transference takes place during the computer revolution of the 80s and early 90s. It shows the shift in literacy from associational to more sequential. From imperative to relational, which is reflected in the world of programming languages with the coming of the webs of networks as the new mandala and artificial intelligence.
The novel finds the writer Walker living Berkeley at the beginning of word processing. We see him in a love story with a lovely older woman during this time when AIDES was just beginning to scare the world. In a Silicon Valley setting, of Bay Area nerd macho he rises in the world through desk top publishing and interactive interface design at a very creative time when these types of work were just coming into the world.  This 10th novel by Lyons, is Volume 4 of the "My Years of Apprenticeship at Love" sextet. It is the sequel to Dolores Park and the 6th of that series to be published by Hitmotel Press.

The Greatest Story of the 20th Century

The biggest story of my generation is the understanding of the universe that emerges with modern science. Especially in the late 20th century, after relativity, and the diffusion of group theory into disciplines of physics and anthropology. If, as Spangler pointed out, calculus was a cultural cue for the understanding of romanticism, what overarching new math can be seen as the secret and subtle fundamental harmonic of our post-modern era.
The Indigenous Tribesmen of Neverland
explores that question. Which is not to say it is an abstract book. Old familiar and new characters are there to be the narrative probe into the zeitgeist.
The novel celebrates the joys of Austin slacker living, through the love story linking the lives of the main characters Walker and the high school girl Laura. In a Tortilla Flat setting, surrounded by friends Weesa the punk lolita, and Wild Bill the post apocalyptic uberboho Moondog character and others, the zeitgeist emerges through its coming to reside in this group of people.
This 9th novel by Lyons, is Volume 2 of the "My Years of Apprenticeship at Love" sextet. It is the 5th of that series to be published by Hitmotel Press.

What is Sex?

After a million years of research we can finally, definitively answer that question: Sex is the Antigravity of Metamorphosis.
This new book by Michael Lyons is a comedy of manners in which a young hitchhiker is picked up by and lives with a cool and hot young mom in his home town of Montreal, and Vermont as winter approaches and after he has been away growing up in Texas.
Many things about life, love, women, art, the viability of romance in the context of parenting and work he does learn. He comes to understand the function in the title which is also a cognitive metaphor structuring the mindscape of the book.
This 8th novel by Lyons, is Volume 1 of the "My Years of Apprenticeship at Love" sextet. It is the 4th of that series to be published by Hitmotel Press.

Get the PUNCTUAL ACTUAL WEEKLY

Centered around a warehouse theatre in 1976 Berkeley and an ephemeral literary magazine called The Punctual Actual Weekly the story combines cultural history, biography and literary analysis in a thought-provoking memoir about the artist's struggle. It depicts the expansion of the poet's mind under the shaping influences of modern poetics in the pursuit of transcendence. In reprinting some of the pages of the magazine the entire spectrum of writing endeavors, including poetry, news writing, play writing, narrative, solo theatre, chanting based on an innovative sound language is evidenced. As well as a poets notebook in graphic novel format, and the catalog of an artist's show. This story of a Castaneda-like apprenticeship to the many word-shamans of modern literature, shows a mind fraught with personal challenges holding a precarious balance between acceptance and inundation and is often hilarious.

"Thoughts on Vacation" A Must Read

The Story: A father and son bringing each other up. Vacation as a state of mind whenever one accepts the invitation of the child to return to the world before received ideas. The sixth novel in the "My Years of Apprenticeship at Love" sextet allows us to experience the life of Walker Underwood as he becomes charmed by his child.
The chapters are loosely coupled and allow for exploration. They amplify the same theme through variations. That theme is the wounded artist finding his way to well-being through the imagination. Take a vacation in your mind. A must read for every parent, or those thinking about it.

A Neither Here Nor There Way

A lyrical, psychological, spiritual handbook, "Knight of a 1000 eyes," in the best of the tradition of commentary on the I Ching, is a humorous and scientific treatise on martial art! It is Taoism, the I Ching, it is an enactment of the enatiomorph, (the yin -yang symbol) at the heart of Jung's Buddhist psychology. This book takes it in the direction of fractal mathematics and the topology of social interactions. It explores the ideas of Tao as Ecology, Tao as Gravity, Tao as the Form of Fractals. Which it not to say that it is all that terribly serious, the story stars off with Walker Underwood, needing to protect his marijuana patch from rustlers on his farm out on the Texas prairie teaches himself tai chi out of a book. Walker grows in the Tao as his learning progresses. He falls in love with the Way as he sees it percolating and diffusing in the land. Check out samples from "Knight of a 1000 eyes" now. Reviews

"A Blue Moon in August":
I just finished reading about Walker Underwood in the 5th novel of the ‘My Years of Apprenticeship at Love’ sextet. Walker has married and is about to immediately become a parent There are some flashbacks about how he decided to marry, and a very good juxtaposition of cult life as opposed to marriage. ...." Parenting Magazine review

"Thoughts on Vacation":
In the 6th novel of the sextet, Walker is now nearly 50 years old, and though he is enthralled with being a new farther, he is also an unfulfilled artist. This is a much darker work than the previous books. There is more death, one of a stranger in an idyllic camp setting and the other of a beloved family member.

"Knight of a 1000 eyes":

"Michael Lyons deconstructs the Tao and the I Ching in his pursuit of the great Way of the universe circulating through, in our moving and thinking...." Tai Chi Times review
