Progression of how character sees himself

The Character of Walker develops in the book. In the first image at the right we see figurative abstraction, and the riemann sphere as crystal ball, and successive frames of statistical particles being moved by maxwells demon.

Walker identified with and projected his desire on his friend Peter Wolf who was a painter of figurative abstraction who lived in a van, and seemed to live a life of total freedom. Walker could feel himself as an artist in this projection.

The picture at right, El Hombre Mariposa, is an image of Walker as he feels more love and power coming into his life through the relationship with Cora. The chapter about going to the dace comes right after this image.

The collage shows three heroines who are always on Walkers mind, subliminally. There is Toni Wolff, Loni Sanders and Marie Schneider (the leading lady in the most shocking film of the time, Last Tango in Paris.)

In the collage are elements from the novel chapters: Last Tango in Berkeley, At the Pussycat Theatre, At the Hot Tub.

The Toni Wolff image in the back cover of a porno movie video box is how Walker projects his admiration and ambivalence toward his therapist, Ms. Z in the novel who to Walker looked very much like Loni Saunders, a famous beautiful porn actress of the time. Toni Wolff was a friend and lover and collaborator of Jung.

The statue of the Concret Man, made out of parts of a torn down freeway, symbolizes the male trying to find his way to more feelings.
