Summary
A woman is driving her Mercedes, about to cross the border from Quebec into Vermont and she picks up some random guy hitchhiking because it is less of a hassle to cross as part of a couple rather than une femme seule. She is a wild woman, recently expelled from her home by divorce, a mom with a three year old.
She is trying to maintain her multitasking supermom wonder woman persona despite a residual noxious anger beneath this surface which gets channeled into a smoldering lust. But which also leaks out in vituperative wit.
Thus begins the story of Walker Underwood, a man blessed to be lucky in love told in this first volume of the My Years of Apprenticeship at Love sextet.
Sex is the Antigravity of Metamorphosis is a passionate, lively tale. She brings him home to her place in Montreal where they try to live together. He is young, and has not had any experience with mothers. Or being a father figure. He tries his best. It is quite funny and heart rending. She is a college teacher and film maker and introduces him to many other actors and writers and poets. He has long hair which gets him only the most wretched jobs. But he does start to move further down the downward path to writer. He realizes: I was working on The Great Aquarian Novel. It was supposed to be some kind of vast wide roman-fleuve like Proust. The river novel, that would run with the flux of time and capture the moment and would flow on forever. A la Recherche de Temps Perdu. Remembrance of Things Past? Shouldn’t it be: To Research Lost Time?

Writing Notes for Sex is the Antigravity of Metamorphosis
From the Author
I majored in physics in college, and even though I took graduate classes in group algegras and the vector space theory of matter, I did not go on to get a Ph.D. because I realized I was not of the right stuff. I graduated from UT Austin in 1972 and started drifting down the downward path to become a writer. Because I didn't have an advanced degree I could only teach and run labs in trade schools and junior colleges. I could work as a technician. I had been knocking around Austin hanging with the Church of the Coincidental Metaphor. And going to the occasional reading at a great book store behind Oat Willies (“It’s great to have friends in high places”). There I discovered Richard Grossinger and Black Sparrow Press.
I decided to hitch up to Canada and maybe find some work and feel better. When I met S in Montreal, I was just working on a journal of self observation. I wrote letters to a few friends. It was in the letter that I discovered the writing style I wanted, intimate, funny, deep. Perhaps some of those journals and letters will show up, I’ll have to remember now.
I don’t know when I wanted to start writing a multi-volume set of novels, probably in Berkeley. Walking from the warehouse where I was crashing behind auto row on Blake St. over to the Berkeley Bowl. Past the big neon BEKINS STORAGE sign on top of their huge warehouse facility. Except the STO was out and it said BEKINS RAGE in blinking red neon agains the black night sky. In the back of my mind I wanted to write some great roman fleuve like Proust or Kerouac to somehow understand the mystery of time. I had read the Alexandria Quartet.
