Lyons writes and designs psychological spiritual factotum novels. It is a literature of ideas in which fictional elements serve the real. His novel Dolores Park gives enough detail about a sangha or Buddhist spiritual commune that one could use it as a blueprint for such a counter-cultural utopian society in a dense urban environment of shared means.
The novels are filled with horny raunch and humor as well as splendid abstractions for the reader of his generation to experience a mind at play in the fields of science. His novel Seeing Through the Spell of Transference is a record of increasing self-awareness and psychological sophistication, as well as a good early history of the computer revolution from in the trenches, and love in the time of AIDS. The overriding plot of his Actualist books is how the author is driven by the desire to write a poem and how he tries to bend the world into a situation that will allow him to do it.
In his memoir-novel The Punctual Actual Weekly, Lyons tells the story of the west coast Actualist scene centered around the playwrights, poets and painters of the Blake St. Hawkeye theatre in Berkeley.
For Lyons the thrust of Actualism develops over the years into what he calls Analytic Synchronicity (Jung) to describe a realistic psychological autobiography incorporating experimental phenomenology. (He wanted to call it Orphic Cubism but that was already taken.) As well as novels, there are several books of poetry. He has composed and produced some thirty-six songs with original music on three albums. And dozens of music videos and readings.
In his books he seeks to bring the reader on a path of increasing understanding and penetration to the truth of who we are. Always the desire of what you want to accomplish in writing is create an environment or situation in which you can let a more intuitive or rhythmic syncopation help generate the thought feeling images.
